AI search optimization for Shopify brands

AI search optimization gets your brand recommended when shoppers ask ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini or Google’s AI answers what to buy. I make your Shopify store readable to AI, get you into the sources AI trusts, and measure how often you’re recommended.

Shoppers no longer type three words into a search bar and click through ten results. They describe their exact situation to an AI assistant: “I have sensitive skin and fragrance makes it worse, what’s a good natural moisturizer?” The assistant answers with a short list of brands, usually three to five, with a reason for each and links to buy.

That short list is the new shelf. If you’re on it, you get a shopper who has already compared options and been told why you fit. If you’re not, a competitor gets that shopper, and you never see the lost sale in your analytics.

AI shoppers convert far better than other traffic because the research is already done. By the time they reach your store, they arrive ready to buy. That’s why AI search and conversion work belong together: one gets you recommended, the other makes sure the store closes the sale.

How does AI decide what to recommend?

AI assistants pick from what they can read and what they trust. That comes from two places.

On site signals

  • Product data. Clear titles, full descriptions, and the attributes shoppers ask about: ingredients, materials, sizes, certifications, who it’s for and who it isn’t for.
  • Structured data. Schema.org markup that states facts about your products in a form machines read without guessing: price, availability, ratings, identifiers, shipping and returns.
  • Answer first content. Product pages and FAQs that answer the real question in the first sentence, not after three paragraphs of brand story.
  • Crawler access. Whether GPTBot, PerplexityBot, ClaudeBot and Google’s crawlers can actually reach your pages. Bot protection often blocks them without anyone noticing.

Off site signals

  • Reviews, on your site and on the platforms AI reads.
  • Best of lists and affiliate articles in your category, which AI cites constantly.
  • Press and publisher coverage.
  • Reddit and forums, where shoppers ask each other for recommendations.
  • Amazon and retail listings, which AI often treats as a source of truth about a product.

What do I do on your site?

  • Complete structured data on every template. Organization and WebSite on the homepage. Product and ProductGroup on product pages, with offers, ratings, reviews, identifiers (GTIN, MPN and SKU), shipping and return policy, additionalProperty for product attributes, and certifications where relevant. BreadcrumbList across the site, ItemList on collections, FAQPage on FAQ content, and Article on blog posts.
  • Fixing what your existing sections emit. Most themes output partial or outdated schema. I fix it at the source so it stays right as the catalog changes.
  • Removing duplicate and conflicting app schema. Review, bundle and subscription apps often add their own markup. I combine it into one complete, consistent record per product.
  • Product attributes based on what AI asks. I run buyer questions for each product type and add the attributes AI needs to recommend you for them, built into your theme so it stays accurate as your catalog changes.
  • Answer first product content and FAQs, written from your customers’ own language.
  • AI crawler access. robots.txt, bot protection settings, your sitemap and an llms.txt file, so AI crawlers can read everything you want them to.

What do I do off site?

  • Finding the sources AI cites in your category. The buyer question test shows exactly which lists, reviews, articles and threads AI leans on when it recommends your competitors.
  • Getting you into them. Affiliate and publisher outreach to the sites AI already trusts in your category.
  • Review strategy, so the platforms AI reads reflect what customers love about your products.
  • Amazon listing improvements, so your retail listings tell AI the same story your store does.

How is AI search measured?

  • 50 buyer questions built from your customers’ language: reviews, support tickets and post purchase survey answers. I run them repeatedly and track your mention rate, your position in each answer, whether the answer is accurate, and which sources are cited.
  • AI referral traffic from ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Copilot in your analytics.
  • A post purchase survey question, because most AI driven visits show up as direct traffic.
  • Branded search and direct traffic growth, which rise as more shoppers hear your name from AI.
  • The high converting visitor segment that AI research produces, so you can see what those shoppers are worth.

Why isn’t schema enough?

Schema is the part of AI search a developer can add in an afternoon, and you should have it. But it’s one of four things AI weighs, and on its own it rarely changes which brands get named. AI recommends the brands it can read, trust and verify:

  • Product data and schema, complete enough that AI knows what each product is and who it’s for.
  • Answer first content that matches the questions shoppers actually ask.
  • Crawler access, so AI can reach the pages at all.
  • Off site sources: the reviews, lists, press and forums that back you up.

Then the store has to turn that shopper into an order. Knowing which buyer questions matter in your category, which sources AI trusts there, and how to convert the traffic is the work. I do all of it, measure it against real buyer questions, and focus where you can win.

What won’t I promise?

No one controls AI answers. Anyone who promises you a ranking in ChatGPT is guessing. What I can do is make your store the easiest one in your category for AI to read and trust, get you into the sources it cites, and measure what changes. I report honestly on every question, and I focus the work on the questions where you can win.

What has AI search work produced?

I’ve written 50+ AEO audits and roadmaps for brands in vitamins, skincare, cosmetics, food, pet and wellness, and optimized 30+ sites for AI search. That work has restructured 4,000+ products with machine readable attributes, alongside 48% average organic traffic growth.

Three recent cases show what it looks like. A wellness startup that AI had never heard of went from a 0% to a 58% ChatGPT mention rate across 50 buyer questions within 90 days. A billion dollar consumer health brand went from 31% to 74% on product level buyer questions, with AI referral traffic up 3.4x. A growing skincare brand grew revenue from AI referred visitors by 212% in 4 months, with those visitors converting at 2.6x the site average. The details are on my results page. Names are withheld under NDA, and these are examples, not guarantees.

What does it cost?

Most brands start with the AI Search and Conversion Audit for $1,500: a 50 buyer question test in ChatGPT, competitor and citation analysis, a conversion leak review and a prioritized plan. The full $1,500 is credited toward a Build started within 30 days. Builds are fixed price, 3 to 4 weeks, from $5,000. Ongoing work runs on the Growth retainer at $4,500/month. Every option is on the pricing page.

FAQ

Questions, answered.

What is AI search optimization?

Making your brand easy for ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Google's AI answers to read, trust and recommend, so you show up when shoppers ask what to buy. It's also called answer engine optimization (AEO) or generative engine optimization (GEO).

Is AI search optimization different from SEO?

It builds on SEO. Search engines rank pages. AI assistants read product data, structured data and what other sites say about you, then name a short list of brands. Good SEO helps, but it doesn't cover complete product data, answer first content or the sources AI cites.

How long does AI search take to show results?

On site fixes can be picked up within weeks as AI crawlers revisit your pages. Off site work and a higher mention rate usually take 60 to 90 days. I measure the same buyer questions before and after, so you can see what moved.

Can't my developer just add schema?

They can add markup, and you should have it. But schema is one input. What gets a brand recommended is complete product data, answers to real buyer questions, crawler access and the sources AI trusts in your category, measured against the questions your buyers ask. That's the work, and it's where most stores fall short.

Can you guarantee ChatGPT will recommend us?

No. No one controls AI answers, and anyone who promises a spot is guessing. I measure your mention rate, position and accuracy across real buyer questions, and focus on the questions where you can win.

Do review apps cause schema problems?

Often. Many review apps add their own Product schema, so one product page ends up with two or three conflicting Product entries. I combine them into one complete Product with offers, ratings and reviews.
